Preaching through Mark: week 10

Mark 10:1-12

“And he arose from thence, and cometh into the coasts of Judæa by the farther side of Jordan: and the people resort unto him again; and, as he was wont, he taught them again. And the Pharisees came to him, and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? tempting him. And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you? And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away. And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept. But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; and they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. And in the house his disciples asked him again of the same matter. And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her. And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery.

He taught them: his cures were to confirm his doctrine, and to recommend it, and his doctrine was to explain his cures, and illustrate them. He taught them again. Note, Even those whom Christ hath taught, have need to be taught again. Such is the fulness of the Christian doctrine, that there is still more to be learned; and such our forgetfulness, that we need to be reminded of what we do know.”1 We see, as in Matt.19, a very high standard for divorce. I would like to quote my post on this text “unfaithfulness” can be understood in a more liberal manner: allowing for divorce in cases of not supporting the family or abuse (I Tim.5:8) regardless of whether sexual unfaithfulness occured. Certainly, this passage sets a high standard for divorce and sexuality morality. However, we must not take this passage literally or to a tee. Abused women are entitled to a divorce. God does not support no fault divorce, and couples should try to preserve their marriages.”4Marriage is a divine institution, so it should not be toyed with. An application of this is that hhomosexual ‘marriage’ is not true.

Mark 10:13-16

And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them. But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them.

Here we see the Lord’s concern for the children. Jesus cares for all of the members of his church. The children of believers are entilted to the ministry of the church. While i am still wrestling with the question of infant baptism; i think there is good reason for it. God reaches out to the children calling them to himself. When an infant is baptized, we have a visible sign of God’s promise ‘i will be with this child, working in his/her liffe’. We are promising to raise our children in the faith. “ 2. He ordered that they should be brought to him, and nothing said or done to hinder them; suffer little children, as soon as they are capable, to come to me, to offer up their supplications to me, and to receive instructions from me. Little children are welcome betimes to the throne of grace with their Hosannas. 3. He owned them as members of his church, as they had been of the Jewish church. He came to set up the kingdom of God among men, and took this occasion to declare that that kingdom admitted little children to be the subjects of it, and gave them a title to the privileges of subjects.”1For whatever reason, even though i am a Baptist I feel a strong urge to baptize young children. When i see young children in the church, i feel like they need God’s grace too. I myself was infant baptized and can see its benefits. We must come to God with an open mind to him, children will listen to anything you say, so too us with God.

Mark 10;17-27

And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God. Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother. And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth. Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions. And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. And they were astonished out of measure, saying among themselves, Who then can be saved? And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.

We can not earn our salvation by works. Therefore we need to have faith. The law can not save, but it is supposed to drive us to Christ. We can not trust in our wealth to save us, rather we must trust in Christ. This applies to induligances, no amount of wealth can buy forgiveness. Forgiveness is by repentance and faith. The law shows us the depth of our sin, it should cause us to look to Christ. Some people take v.18 as denying the deity of the Son. John Gill’s commentary states “ some render it, “but one God”, as the Vulgate Latin, Syriac, and Arabic versions; and so the words are a proof of the unity of the divine being, and agree with Deuteronomy 6:4, but are not to be understood to the exclusion of the Son and Spirit, who, with the Father, are the one God: nor do these words at all militate against the deity of Christ, or prove that he is not God, as the Jew objects a; seeing this is not to be understood of the person of the Father, in opposition to the Son and Spirit, who are equally good: nor does Christ, in these words, deny himself to be God, but rather tacitly suggests it; since he is good in the same sense in which God is good: in Matthew it is added, “but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments”, Matthew 19:17: this Christ said not as his sense, that the way to eternal life lies in keeping the commandments of the law; but he speaks in the language of the Pharisees, and of this man; and his view is, to bring him to a sense of the impossibility of obtaining eternal life by these things, as the sequel shows: wherefore the above Jew b has no reason to confront the followers of Jesus with this passage, as if it was a concession of his, that it is impossible any should be saved without keeping the commands of the law of Moses.”2

Mark 10:28-31

Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee. And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s, but he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life. But many that are first shall be last; and the last first.

We ought to put the Lord before all others.  He is the center of our lives. The early church had martyrs who died for their faith, they have a high place in the kingdom.

Mark 10:32-34

And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus went before them: and they were amazed; and as they followed, they were afraid. And he took again the twelve, and began to tell them what things should happen unto him, saying, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles: and they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him: and the third day he shall rise again.

We see a prophesy of the death of jesus. The mission of jesus was  to die for our salvation.

Mark 10:35-40

And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come unto him, saying, Master, we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire. And he said unto them, What would ye that I should do for you? They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory. But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, Ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized: but to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give; but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared. And when the ten heard it, they began to be much displeased with James and John.

The apostles loved the Lord. They wanted to share in the Lord’s ministry, [which is good] but they can not share in the death of the savior. Only God incarnated could offer himself. We should seek to serve and sacrifice for the gospel

Mark 10:41-45

But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise Lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them. But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: and whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all. For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

The Lord came to die for our salvation. As christians we are to serve others. I keep going back to the conceot of service. Jesus serves in his life, death, and resurrection. Jesus died for his church, and rose for us. “Christ executeth the office of a priest, in his once offering up of himself, a sacrifice to satisfy divine justice and reconcile us to God, and in making continual intercession for us” Heb 9:14,28 Heb 2:17 Heb 7:24-25; Heb 12:24-25”3

Mark 10:46-52

And they came to Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimæus, the son of Timæus, sat by the highway side begging. And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me. And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great deal, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me. And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called. And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise; he calleth thee. And he, casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus. And Jesus answered and said unto him, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight. And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.”

Jesus is the miracle worker. He has the power to heal us. We should cry out for our healing, the Lord answers our prayer.

APPLICATION:

We should humbly seek the Lord. We need to teach the gospel to our children. Infant baptism is a sign of our faith in the future faith of the children. It is an act of faith, awaiting the child’s affirmation of the baptism via profession of faith. We have a mediator who pleads for us via his death.

Hymn of response:

“Jesus Come Talk To Your Children” TRACY LAWRANCR

Jesus come talk to your children

Jesus come talk to us Lord

Jesus come talk, come talk, come talk to your children

Lord we gotta war down here

I Guess you might have heard

Tween blue and red, right and left,

The blessed and the cursed

That golden rule has lost its shine

And best as I could tell

Love thy neighbor and turn the other cheek

Has all gone straight to Hell

Jesus come talk to your children

Jesus come talk to us Lord

Jesus come talk, come talk, come talk to your children

Lord we have had some storms down here

Guess you might have seen

Some folks showed their good side

Some were down right mean.

The politics of fear and hate

Create the great divide.

They got us at each others throat

And got you taking sides.

So

Jesus come talk to your children

Jesus come talk to us Lord

Jesus come talk, come talk, come talk to your children

We are black and blue

Tried and true

We are lions and we are sheep

So when I go to lay me down

My ragged soul to keep

I say…

Jesus come talk to your children

Jesus come talk to us Lord

Jesus come talk, come talk, come talk to your children

Jesus come talk to your children

Jesus come talk to us Lord

Jesus come talk, come talk, come talk to your children

I say Jesus come talk come talk to your children
